India to Enforce New Online Gaming Rules from May 1, Tightening Curbs on Real-Money Games

India News : India is set to introduce significant changes to its online gaming ecosystem, with new rules coming into effect from May 1. The Ministry of Electronics and IT has issued a notification outlining the updated framework, aiming to streamline regulation while promoting growth in the sector.

According to IT Secretary S. Krishnan, most online games will not be required to register under the new system. However, real-money gaming—already restricted—will face stricter enforcement. The government has clarified that oversight mechanisms will only be applied under specific conditions, keeping the regulatory approach relatively flexible.

Esports titles, on the other hand, will be subject to mandatory registration in line with existing legal provisions. The broader objective is to encourage esports and non-monetized gaming while discouraging betting or wagering-based platforms.

The government has also emphasized keeping the system “light-touch,” allowing the majority of non-monetary games to operate freely without compulsory registration. Developers may still opt for voluntary registration if they choose.

Games will be classified under three categories:

  • Decisions taken independently by the regulatory authority (suo motu)
  • Esports-related games
  • Special categories of social games notified by the central government

For users, the new rules are expected to enhance safety and strengthen data protection measures. The ministry had previously sought public feedback in October 2025, receiving around 2,500 responses before finalizing the framework.
