Bihar News : The Bihar government is taking several steps to strengthen the preservation of the state’s historical, cultural and religious heritage. The development of museums is part of these efforts to conserve and showcase Bihar’s ancient and cultural heritage through modern and world-class facilities.
Located at the confluence of the Kiul-Harohar and Ganga rivers, Lakhisarai is home to a rich religious and archaeological legacy. The district has significant potential to connect its historical sites with the Buddha, Shiva and Ramayana circuits. Several important archaeological sites and ancient artefacts have also been discovered in the district.
Museum Built to Preserve Historical Heritage
With the objective of preserving this heritage, former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar laid the foundation stone of the Lakhisarai Museum. The museum was formally inaugurated on February 6, 2025.
The museum is described as Bihar’s second-largest world-class museum. Spread across around 1.5 acres, it has been developed under the Department of Art, Culture and Youth Affairs, while its construction was completed by the Building Construction Department.
The museum has been developed with modern facilities on the lines of the Patna Museum and Bihar Museum. Built at a cost of around Rs 35.8 crore, the Lakhisarai (Balgudar) Museum is aimed at giving a new dimension to the district’s historical identity.
Focus on Heritage Tourism
Recently, in August 2026, Deputy Chief Minister Vijendra Prasad Yadav praised the arrangements at the museum. The district administration has also been directed to prepare a detailed proposal to develop the museum as a major world-class tourism centre.
The proposed development is aimed at promoting both employment opportunities and cultural tourism in the region.
The current government is also focusing on showcasing Bihar’s heritage, culture and civilisation to the country and the world through ‘Brand Bihar’ under the leadership of Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.
Museum Showcases Ancient Buddhist Heritage
According to historians and archaeologists, the Lakhisarai Museum is an important centre for the study of ancient Indian history, particularly Buddhism and Gupta and early-medieval culture.
Lakhisarai is known for its ancient Buddhist remains, Pala-period sculptures, inscriptions and stupas. The Department of Art and Culture has focused on ensuring that these historical treasures are properly preserved and displayed through the museum in its new form.
The three-storey museum features organised display galleries, modern lighting, audio-visual facilities, indoor and outdoor theatres and a visitor-friendly campus. These facilities are intended to present historical information in an engaging manner and provide visitors with an opportunity to understand Lakhisarai’s history and archaeological significance at one place.
Archaeological Sites Add to Lakhisarai’s Heritage
Remains found at sites such as Lali Pahadi, Nongarhgarh, Bichhwe Pahadi and Singarpur tell the story of Lakhisarai’s rich past. Preserving and displaying these heritage remains through the museum is expected to strengthen the district’s historical identity and promote tourism.
The development of the museum is also expected to give fresh momentum to heritage conservation and tourism. It will provide the younger generation with an opportunity to learn about its roots and help establish Lakhisarai as one of Bihar’s prominent heritage centres.
Rare Ancient Statue Preserved in Museum
A significant archaeological discovery was made during excavation at Sansar Pokhar in the city in June 2026. A rare ancient statue made of black stone and measuring around two feet in height was subsequently placed in the Lakhisarai Museum after completing the required legal formalities.
What Do Lakhisarai Residents Say?
Lakhisarai resident Abhinav said that there are many historical places around the district, but people were not sufficiently aware of them earlier. He said preserving them at one place would help future generations learn about the history of their land.
Another local resident, Rohan, said that developing a modern museum while preserving historical heritage would be a matter of pride for everyone. He added that it would also help the younger generation understand its history and culture more closely.
Local resident Monalisa said that building a museum in a small city was a significant achievement. She said the Bihar government’s development of such a museum in Lakhisarai was improving the identity of the city.
