Patna: Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) will admit students against its increased intake of 200 MBBS seats for the first time in the 2026-27 academic session. However, only seven students have taken admission after the first phase of counselling held from August 28 to September 1.
According to Principal Prof. Dr Usha Kumari, the admission of one differently-abled student was not completed after the disability certificate was found to be incorrect during document verification.
College Waiting for Dates of Further Counselling Rounds
The principal said the college was waiting for the announcement of dates for the second and subsequent rounds of counselling.
NMCH previously had an intake capacity of 150 MBBS seats. With an increase of 50 seats this year, admissions will now be conducted for a total of 200 seats for the first time.
The principal said several changes have been made in the college’s arrangements along with efforts to provide quality education. Students taking admission will receive more facilities than before.
Due to the timing of the NEET results and delays in the admission process, the academic session is expected to begin in October this year. Earlier, the session used to begin in July.
Surprise Inspection Finds Gaps at Government Tibbi College and Hospital
Meanwhile, questions have been raised over the prolonged admission of patients at the Government Tibbi College and Hospital.
During a surprise inspection conducted by State AYUSH Committee Executive Director and Health Department Additional Secretary Vaibhav Chaudhary, several patients were found to have been admitted for long periods.
During examination of hospital registers, entries for some patients who were found admitted could not be located.
Inspection Also Highlights Academic and Hospital Management Issues
The surprise inspection also revealed several shortcomings in the functioning of the hospital and college.
The inspection found that regular classes were not being conducted. Male and female patients were accommodated together in several wards, while some doctors were found absent from duty.
It is reported that Additional Secretary Vaibhav Chaudhary had earlier conducted a surprise inspection of the Tibbi College and Hospital on July 13. Several shortcomings related to both hospital and college operations had also come to light during that inspection.
Instructions were subsequently issued to improve the arrangements. However, shortcomings were again found at several levels during the latest inspection, raising questions over the functioning of the hospital.
The inspection report has directed the college principal and hospital superintendent to establish better coordination for improving the system.
The focus has been placed on streamlining patient admission arrangements, ward management, doctors’ attendance and academic activities.
