Severe Malnutrition in Jharkhand: 22% Children’s Bodies Consuming Their Own Muscles for Energy

Jharkhand News : Malnutrition in Jharkhand remains a serious public health concern. According to the Economic Survey report presented by the state government, around 22% of children in Jharkhand are suffering from “wasting”, the most severe form of malnutrition. In this condition, the body first consumes stored fat and eventually breaks down its own muscle protein to produce energy.

Poverty and lack of nutrition the main causes

Experts say the root cause of malnutrition is poverty and lack of adequate nutrition. When children do not receive enough food and nutrients, they first develop anemia, followed by weight loss. Over time, their height fails to grow according to age, resulting in stunting.

When the condition becomes critical, children reach the wasting stage, where the body becomes extremely weak and skeletal.

Worse than national average

The report shows that Jharkhand’s malnutrition indicators are worse than the national average in several categories:

  • Anemia:

    • India average: 67.1%

    • Jharkhand: 67.5%

  • Stunting:

    • India average: 35.5%

    • Jharkhand: 39.6%

  • Wasting:

    • India average: 19.3%

    • Jharkhand: 22%

In the state capital Ranchi, the proportion of children facing wasting is estimated to be between 30–40%.

Districts with alarming numbers

Malnutrition affects districts differently across Jharkhand.

30–40% children facing wasting:

  • Ranchi

  • Khunti

  • West Singhbhum

20–30% children facing wasting:

  • Gumla, Lohardaga, Simdega, Ramgarh, Giridih

  • East Singhbhum, Jamtara, Dumka, Pakur, Godda

10–20% children facing wasting:

  • Koderma, Hazaribagh, Bokaro, Dhanbad

  • Chatra, Latehar, Palamu, Garhwa, Deoghar

  • Sahibganj, Seraikela-Kharsawan

West Singhbhum worst in stunting

The district of West Singhbhum has the highest level of stunting, with 60–70% of children affected. Pakur also shows serious levels, with 50–60% of children suffering from stunting.

Nine government schemes running to fight malnutrition

To tackle malnutrition, the government is implementing nine major schemes, including:

  • Anganwadi Services

  • Poshan Abhiyaan

  • Saksham Anganwadi Poshan 2.0

  • PM Poshan Scheme

  • Anemia Mukt Bharat

  • Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana

  • National Deworming Program

  • Vitamin A Supplement Program

  • Janani Suraksha Yojana

Situation still alarming

Despite multiple welfare programs, the high level of malnutrition among children in Jharkhand remains deeply concerning. Experts say the figures raise serious questions about whether the benefits of these schemes are effectively reaching children at the grassroots level.
