Ambuja Cements’ Next Growth Wave to Take Shape in GODDA, Targeting 155 MTPA Capacity by FY30
  • New 2.9 MTPA grinding unit in Jharkhand to anchor expansion across six states; ₹14,500 crore growth capex to strengthen pan-India manufacturing network

Ahmedabad/Ranchi : Ambuja Cements Limited, part of the Adani Portfolio and one of India’s leading building materials solutions providers, has firmed up its next phase of growth, with plans to add approximately 30 MTPA of cement capacity through greenfield and brownfield projects across key markets. The expansion programme includes a proposed 2.9 MTPA cement grinding unit at Godda in Jharkhand, marking a significant addition to the company’s manufacturing footprint in eastern India. With a total growth capex programme of around ₹14,500 crore, Ambuja Cements aims to take its overall cement capacity to 155 MTPA by FY30.

The planned expansion will strengthen the company’s manufacturing network across the East, West and North, with new capacities across Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. Ambuja Cements currently has a cement capacity of 113.5 MTPA, supported by a pan-India network of 24 integrated plants and 24 grinding units.

Godda to strengthen Ambuja’s eastern India footprint

The proposed 2.9 MTPA grinding unit at Godda, Jharkhand, is a key component of Ambuja Cements’ expansion strategy in eastern India. The project will complement planned additions in Assam and Bihar, strengthening the company’s ability to serve high-growth markets with improved manufacturing reach and logistics efficiencies.

The East Cluster expansion also includes 2.9 MTPA grinding units each at Rangia and Hojai in Assam, and Muzaffarpur in Bihar. In addition, the company plans to establish 4 MTPA of clinker capacity at Umrangso in Assam, strengthening the upstream supply network required to support the expanded grinding footprint.

The Godda project reflects the company’s focus on expanding closer to demand centres, enhancing regional supply capabilities and building a more balanced manufacturing network.

Six-state expansion to add new grinding and clinker capacities

Under the proposed programme, Ambuja Cements plans to add approximately 15.5 MTPA of grinding capacity in the West Cluster, 11.6 MTPA in the East Cluster and 2.9 MTPA in the North Cluster.

In Gujarat, the expansion includes 2.9 MTPA grinding units each at Mundra and Hazira. Maharashtra will see capacity additions of 2.9 MTPA each at Raigad, Kalyan and Amravati, along with 0.7 MTPA at Dahanu. In Uttar Pradesh, the company plans to add 2.9 MTPA through Dadri Line 2.

The programme also includes new clinker capacities of 4 MTPA at Maratha in the West Cluster and 2.3 MTPA at Mundra, in addition to 4 MTPA at Umrangso in Assam. These additions will strengthen the upstream network and support the expanded grinding operations.

Vinod Bahety, CEO – Cement Business, Adani Group, said, “Our next phase of expansion is focused on quality of growth and creating a more balanced manufacturing network. By strengthening the link between clinker and grinding capacity and expanding closer to the high-growth-potential markets, we are building greater flexibility into the network. As we scale, our focus is on combining market reach with logistics and cost efficiencies so that every capacity addition strengthens the competitiveness of the overall business.”

He added that the company’s vibrant supply chain ecosystem, stronger brand equity and increasing share of premium cement in these markets would complement its value-based growth strategy.

Capacity to reach 119 MTPA by March 2027

The new expansion programme builds on the capacity additions already underway. During H1 FY27, Ambuja Cements added 4.6 MTPA through the 1.2 MTPA brownfield expansion at Dahej in Gujarat, the 2.4 MTPA Salai Banwa Grinding Unit in Uttar Pradesh and the 1.0 MTPA brownfield expansion at Kalamboli in Maharashtra, taking its overall cement capacity to 113.5 MTPA.

The near-term pipeline includes the stabilisation and ramp-up of 1.2 MTPA at Bathinda Grinding Unit in Punjab and 2 MTPA at Jodhpur Penna Integrated Unit in Rajasthan during H2 FY27. The 2.4 MTPA Warisaliganj Grinding Unit in Bihar is also expected to be commissioned during the second half of the financial year.

With these additions, the company expects its total cement capacity to reach 119 MTPA by the end of March 2027.

The proposed expansion, together with additional debottlenecking initiatives, is expected to take total capacity to 155 MTPA by FY30. The programme is designed to strengthen market reach, improve manufacturing efficiencies and reduce logistics costs by bringing production facilities closer to key consumption markets. The company is targeting a cement cost of ₹4,000 per metric tonne by FY28.

Since its acquisition, Ambuja Cements has completed 11 capacity projects, adding 16.3 MTPA of cement capacity and 9.0 MTPA of clinker capacity up to 30 September 2026. The new ~30 MTPA expansion programme represents the next phase of this journey, further strengthening the scale, geographic reach and efficiency of its pan-India manufacturing network.
