Bihar News : The Bihar government has taken a major step to increase agricultural productivity and ensure uninterrupted irrigation facilities for farmers. The ‘Har Khet Tak Sinchai Ka Pani’ programme, being implemented under Saat Nischay-2, has been extended until 2030.
As part of the initiative, the state Cabinet, in its meeting held on August 19, approved a revised administrative sanction of Rs 305.60 crore for setting up 11,000 private tubewells during the financial year 2026-27 under the Mukhyamantri Niji Nalkup Yojana.
Rs 305.60 Crore Approved for 11,000 Tubewells
Around 70 percent of Bihar’s population depends on agriculture. To increase farmers’ income and protect cultivation from weather uncertainties, the government is focusing on the installation of private tubewells.
Under the scheme, farmers will receive financial assistance and subsidies to install borewells and tubewells on their agricultural land. The initiative is aimed at making irrigation easier through groundwater resources.
Irrigation Capacity to Be Restored Across 7.56 Lakh Hectares
According to Minor Water Resources Minister Dr Santosh Kumar Suman, a comprehensive survey of surface irrigation schemes has been conducted across the state, keeping future water requirements in mind.
A committee headed by the Deputy Development Commissioner (DDC) identified 7,014 new surface irrigation schemes based on the survey.
The phased implementation of these schemes is expected to restore around 7,56,380 hectares of irrigation capacity across Bihar.
The government is also prioritising water conservation through the renovation and restoration of traditional water sources such as ahar, pyne and ponds.
Restoration of Ahar-Pyne Systems Shows Impact
The restoration of Tetravan Pyne in Biharsharif block of Nalanda district has increased its irrigation capacity to 430 hectares. Local farmer Arun Singh said the restoration has helped resolve irrigation problems across thousands of bighas of farmland.
Similarly, the restoration of Talo Ahar in Sono block of Jamui district has ensured water availability for both Kharif and Rabi crops across 40 hectares of agricultural land.
