According to officials, the vessel departed from a port in Banyuwangi Regency of East Java and was en route to the Gilimanuk port in Bali’s Jembrana Regency when it encountered strong waves late Wednesday night, just before midnight. The sudden turbulence caused the boat to capsize, leading to the current crisis.
I Nyoman Sidakarya, the head of the Bali Search and Rescue Office, confirmed the deaths and said that teams from both Bali and East Java are participating in the search operation. The vessel reportedly carried 65 people in total, including 53 passengers and 12 crew members.
The cause of the accident appears to be extreme sea conditions. The rescue teams are using all available resources—boats, drones, and divers—to locate the missing individuals. High tides and inclement weather, however, continue to pose challenges for the operation.
The Indonesian authorities are now investigating whether the ferry had received clearance to sail, given the weather alerts in place. There are growing concerns that warnings may have been ignored, contributing to the fatal incident.
China’s Xinhua News Agency also reported on the tragedy, and international attention is now focused on the safety standards of maritime travel in Indonesia, which has seen multiple similar accidents in recent years.
The government has promised a thorough investigation and support for the families of the victims. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has urged people to avoid sea travel until weather conditions improve.
