World News : China is grappling with widespread destruction caused by Typhoon Bavi, which has triggered severe flooding in several regions and forced millions of people to evacuate their homes.
Several parts of the country have been inundated, with roads submerged under up to two metres of water. Videos circulating on social media reportedly show vehicles being swept away by powerful floodwaters.
Most Powerful Storm to Hit China This Year
Typhoon Bavi was reportedly the most powerful storm to hit China this year, bringing torrential rain and strong winds to the country’s eastern regions. Authorities had warned that areas already affected by heavy rainfall could receive even more rain.
More than two million people have reportedly been evacuated to safer locations in Zhejiang province. Reports suggest that in areas where floodwaters are relatively calm, some residents have been using swimming and paddleboards to move around.
More Than 1,300 Trees Reportedly Brought Down
In the coastal city of Yueqing in Zhejiang, more than 1,300 trees were reportedly knocked down, including around 700 that were uprooted. Water levels in 46 rivers across China have risen above warning levels.
Schools have been closed, while several flights and train services have been cancelled.
Typhoon Bavi reportedly formed over the Pacific Ocean 13 days ago and became the longest-lasting tropical cyclone in the Asia-Pacific region this year.
According to meteorologists, Bavi has now weakened into a tropical storm and is moving towards the Korean Peninsula. It is expected to weaken further while releasing accumulated moisture, potentially bringing additional heavy rainfall to the region.
