Jharkhand News : Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL), a joint venture of NTPC Limited and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL), has achieved a major milestone with the successful trial operation of Unit-2 (800 MW) of the Patratu Super Thermal Power Project on May 11, 2026. With the commissioning of the second unit, PVUNL’s total installed power generation capacity has now reached 1600 MW.
The achievement also marks a significant moment for the NTPC Group, whose overall installed power generation capacity has crossed the historic 90 GW milestone. The development strengthens NTPC’s position as India’s leading power producer and reflects the rapid expansion of the country’s energy infrastructure.
PVUNL Chief Executive Officer Ashok Kumar Sehgal said the successful operationalisation of Unit-2 has transformed PVUNL into a key contributor to Jharkhand’s energy landscape. He stated that nearly 85 percent of the electricity generated from the project has been allocated to Jharkhand, which will significantly enhance the state’s energy security and support industrial as well as economic growth in the coming years.
He further informed that Unit-1 of the project had achieved Commercial Operation Date (COD) on November 5, 2025, while Unit-2 attained full-load capacity in March 2026. During the financial year 2025-26, PVUNL generated 2,062.90 million units (MU) of electricity. Work on Unit-3 is also progressing rapidly, with commissioning targeted during FY 2026-27.
The Patratu Super Thermal Power Project has been developed using advanced Ultra Super Critical (USC) technology, Air Cooled Condensers (ACC), and a 100 percent dry ash disposal system, making it an environmentally sustainable thermal power project. Alongside power generation, PVUNL is also focusing on skill development and workforce capacity building for future energy needs.
A.K. Sehgal expressed gratitude to NTPC, JBVNL, the Jharkhand Government, Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Ministry of Power, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), partner organisations, workers, and stakeholders for their continued support in achieving the milestone.
