Tata Power Targets India’s AI Boom With 2.8 GW Data Centre Pipeline

Tata Power Targets India's AI Boom With 2.8 GW Data Centre Pipeline

Jamshedpur, October 14, 2026: Tata Power Company Limited is strengthening its presence in India’s expanding data centre sector, with an opportunity pipeline exceeding 2.8 GW across 18 leading global and domestic data centre operators. The company is pursuing 29 active workstreams covering renewable energy, transmission and distribution (T&D), and integrated infrastructure solutions.

As demand for artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and digital platforms grows, Tata Power is expanding its role beyond electricity supply. Its proposed solutions include powered land, transmission and grid connectivity, renewable energy, energy storage, cooling systems and utility infrastructure for hyperscale and next-generation data centres.

2.8 GW-Plus Pipeline Across Three Segments

Tata Power’s data centre opportunity pipeline comprises three major segments:

Business Segment Opportunity Pipeline
Upcoming load under its distribution network Approximately 430 MW
Transmission-linked opportunities 1,236 MW
Green energy capacity under active engagement 1,150 MW
Total Approximately 2.8 GW

The combined opportunities amount to approximately 2,816 MW, representing a pipeline of more than 2.8 GW.

With 29 active workstreams across 18 data centre operators, Tata Power is pursuing opportunities to support large-scale digital infrastructure and the power requirements of hyperscale facilities.

Integrated Power Solutions for AI and Data Centres

Tata Power’s presence across the power value chain, spanning generation, transmission and distribution, positions the company to offer integrated solutions for data centre developers.

These solutions include access to powered land, grid connectivity, renewable electricity, battery storage, cooling systems and supporting utility infrastructure.

The integrated approach is intended to help data centre operators address their substantial power requirements while supporting reliable operations and the expansion of AI-ready infrastructure.

₹15,000 Crore Mumbai Grid Upgrade Plan

To meet the growing electricity requirements of hyperscale data centres in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Tata Power is strengthening its transmission infrastructure through upgrades to its 110 kV and 220 kV networks.

The company is augmenting transformation and transmission capacities and improving network redundancy to support reliable and uninterrupted electricity supply for large digital infrastructure projects.

Tata Power is also developing new receiving stations and advancing a 400 kV transmission ring network to strengthen grid resilience and prepare the region for additional data centre demand.

These initiatives form part of Tata Power’s ₹15,000 crore Mumbai Grid Upgradation and Expansion Plan, which aims to enhance the capacity and reliability of the city’s electricity network.

India’s AI Growth Expected to Increase Power Demand

As India develops its position as a global hub for AI and digital infrastructure, the availability of reliable electricity is expected to become increasingly important.

According to estimates from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) cited by the Ministry of Power, AI-led data centres could add approximately 26.3 GW to India’s electricity demand by FY2031–32.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has also highlighted the growing contribution of emerging economies, including India, to global data centre activity and electricity demand.

Against this backdrop, Tata Power’s combination of generation capabilities, grid infrastructure and renewable energy solutions positions it to pursue opportunities arising from India’s expanding digital economy.

Tata Power Strengthens Its Digital Infrastructure Role

The company’s expanding opportunity pipeline reflects the growing connection between energy infrastructure and the development of AI, cloud computing and digital services.

By combining renewable generation, transmission and distribution networks, storage and utility solutions, Tata Power is seeking to address the energy and infrastructure needs of data centre operators.

As demand for computing capacity continues to grow, reliable power supply and resilient electricity networks will remain important considerations for India’s digital infrastructure expansion.
