World News : In a continued effort to strengthen ties with friendly nations in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) amid rising Chinese assertiveness, the Indian Navy’s hydrographic survey ship INS Sutlej has arrived at Port Louis, Mauritius. The deployment is part of the 18th Joint Hydrographic Survey between India and Mauritius.
The survey will cover an estimated 35,000 square nautical miles, focusing on enhancing maritime safety and regional cooperation. As part of a capacity-building initiative, officials from various Mauritian ministries will be onboard INS Sutlej to receive hands-on training in hydrographic data collection and processing.
This mission is being conducted under the framework of the long-term bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed during the 14th Joint Committee Meeting on Hydrography held earlier in 2025.
The Indian Navy emphasized that the deployment of INS Sutlej highlights both nations’ shared commitment to advanced scientific collaboration and strategic maritime partnership. The key objectives include:
-
Enhancing navigational safety
-
Sustainable management of marine resources
-
Promoting regional maritime cooperation
India’s “Look East” policy considers Mauritius as a key strategic and economic partner in the IOR. Mauritius is not only a trusted ally but also plays a crucial role in maritime security, aligning with India’s broader aim to balance Chinese influence in the region.
India continues to support Mauritius through economic aid, defense partnerships, and technical assistance, reinforcing the strong bilateral ties based on shared historical and cultural heritage.
