Offbeat News : During the winter season, reduced moisture in the air often leads to eye-related problems such as dryness, itching, burning sensation, redness, and fatigue. Health experts say that along with overall body care, protecting eye health is equally important in cold weather. According to Ayurveda, the eyes reflect the body’s internal condition, and issues like stress, pollution, poor diet, weak digestion, lack of sleep, excessive cold wind exposure, and increased pitta dosha first affect the eyes.
Ayurveda emphasizes natural and preventive methods to maintain eye health. One of the most effective remedies mentioned in Ayurvedic texts is Triphala, which is considered a “netra aushadhi” (medicine for the eyes). Triphala water is believed to soothe the eyes and reduce irritation. To prepare it, Triphala powder is soaked in water overnight, strained in the morning, and the water is gently used to wash the eyes. This practice helps reduce dryness, itching, and provides natural cooling.
Cow ghee is another valuable remedy for eye care. Consuming one teaspoon of desi ghee daily nourishes the eyes from within. Ayurveda also suggests applying a very small amount of ghee like kohl when redness or foreign particles irritate the eyes. Applying ghee behind the ears and massaging the soles before sleep helps relieve eye strain and improves sleep quality.
For better eyesight, Ayurvedic experts recommend consuming Amla (Indian Gooseberry) every morning on an empty stomach. Amla powder with warm water or fresh amla juice boosts eye strength and provides essential Vitamin C, which supports vision and overall immunity.
People who spend long hours on computers and mobile screens are advised to follow the 20-20-20 rule—every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Regular blinking is equally important, as constant screen use reduces blinking and causes dryness.
Additionally, adding 1–2 drops of pure rose water or Palash water to the eyes daily can relieve itching and burning caused by pollution.
By adopting these Ayurvedic practices, eye health can be protected naturally during winter, ensuring comfort, clarity, and long-term vision wellness.
