Sports News : Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman will not play in IPL 2026, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially confirmed. The decision comes amid growing controversy following protests related to the issue of alleged atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh.
After the controversy intensified, pressure mounted on the BCCI regarding Mustafizur’s participation in the upcoming IPL season. The board has now directed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release the player and has allowed the franchise to choose a replacement.
BCCI Statement on the Decision
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia told ANI:
“Considering the recent developments, the BCCI has instructed KKR to release their Bangladeshi player Mustafizur Rahman. The board has also informed the franchise that it will be permitted to select a replacement player.”
Bought for ₹9.20 Crore in Mini Auction
KKR had purchased the 30-year-old left-arm pacer for ₹9.20 crore during last month’s mini auction. Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals had also shown interest in Mustafizur, who was the only Bangladeshi player sold in the auction.
Political and Social Backlash
Several religious leaders and politicians strongly criticized KKR’s decision to buy Mustafizur. Statements were also made against KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan.
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam urged Shah Rukh Khan to reconsider the franchise’s decision, citing public anger against Bangladesh. BJP leader and former UP MLA Sangeet Som went further, stating that no Bangladeshi player should be allowed to play in India. Spiritual leader Rambhadracharya also made strong remarks on the issue.
Mustafizur Rahman’s IPL Career
Mustafizur Rahman has played 65 IPL matches, taking 65 wickets, and has represented five franchises so far:
-
2016: Sunrisers Hyderabad (IPL debut)
-
2018: Mumbai Indians
-
2021: Rajasthan Royals
-
2022–23: Delhi Capitals
-
2024: Chennai Super Kings
-
2025: Returned to Delhi Capitals
What Are KKR’s Options Now?
Following BCCI’s directive, KKR can now look for a replacement overseas or domestic player to strengthen their squad ahead of IPL 2026. The franchise is expected to focus on maintaining balance in its bowling attack.
With this decision, it is now clear that Mustafizur Rahman will not feature in IPL 2026, marking a rare instance where off-field political and social factors have directly influenced player participation in the league.
