Jharkhand News : A financially distressed family attempted mass suicide on Sunday night in Ranchi’s Kadru area, resulting in the death of a 24-year-old man, while his mother and minor sister remain in critical condition. The incident occurred at New AG Colony, Temple Road.
The deceased has been identified as Mihir Shekhar Akhouri, a chartered accountant. His mother Sneha Akhouri, a lawyer by profession, and his 14-year-old sister Saumya were rushed to Guru Nanak Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
After receiving information, Argora Police Station reached the spot and recovered Mihir’s body, which was sent to RIMS for post-mortem examination. Preliminary investigation indicates that acute financial distress and mounting debt drove the family to take the extreme step.
Consumed 17 strips of medicine, then suicide
Police said all three family members consumed 17 strips each of anti-depression medicines in an attempt to end their lives. When Mihir later regained consciousness and realised the medication had not proved fatal, he allegedly decided to hang himself. Saumya told police that she tried repeatedly to stop her brother, but he made a noose using a rope and hanged himself from a ceiling fan.
Job loss and debt pressure
Mihir was working with a company in Kolkata but lost his job in January. Following this, he reportedly borrowed money from several people and was unable to pay loan EMIs, which added to the family’s financial burden. His mother Sneha had stopped practising law about three years ago due to lack of work. The family had been facing economic hardship for a long time.
Suicide planned days earlier
Family members told police that Sneha Akhouri had planned the suicide nearly three days earlier and had misled relatives by saying she was travelling to Kolkata with her children. The incident came to light on Monday when relatives heard a loud noise from inside the locked house and forced entry.
Police are investigating all aspects of the case, including financial liabilities, job loss, and mental stress, and are recording statements of relatives and neighbours.
