E-Cigarettes and Vaping Making Youth Sick, Global Report Warns

World News : A new global report has raised alarming concerns over the growing trend of e-cigarette and vaping use among young people, calling it a serious threat to both physical and mental health.

The study, prepared by researchers at the University of York and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, analyzed 384 studies from 56 reviews covering data from across the world.

The findings reveal a “disturbing pattern”: young people who start with e-cigarettes are significantly more likely to take up traditional smoking later—and in greater quantities. Over time, they smoke more frequently and become heavily addicted.

Health Risks Highlighted

The UK government has already taken action by banning disposable vapes—with or without nicotine—starting June, in an effort to protect children from early addiction.

According to NHS data, nearly 25% of children aged 11–15 in Britain have tried vaping, and about 10% use it regularly. Another study by University College London found that between 2013 and 2023, long-term vaping surged dramatically among young adults—about 22.7% at age 18, compared to just 4.3% at age 65.

Worryingly, the report noted that while many vapers were former smokers, an increasing number of never-smokers are now becoming addicted to vaping.

Experts warn that without stricter controls, vaping could pave the way for a new generation of nicotine-dependent youth, with long-term health consequences.
