Mothers to Observe Nirjala Fast for Children’s Long Life: Jivitputrika Vrat on September 14

Jharkhand News : The auspicious Jivitputrika Vrat (Jitiya Vrat) will be observed on September 14, falling on Ashtami of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Ashwin. According to Acharya Manoj Pandey, as per the Rishikesh Panchang, Ashtami begins at 8:41 AM on September 14 and ends at 6:27 AM on September 15. The ritual conclusion (Paran) will take place after 6:27 AM on September 15.

The three-day observance starts with Nahay-Khay on September 13, followed by the Nirjala fast on Ashtami (September 14), and concludes with Paran on Navami (September 15). Acharya Pandey explained that Jivitputrika is a Pradoshkalik Chandra Vyapini Vrat, meaning it is determined not just by sunrise but also by the moon’s movement and Pradosh timing.

This fast is considered one of the toughest, as women observe a complete waterless fast for an entire day, praying for the well-being, long life, and prosperity of their children. On Saptami, women take a ritual bath, offer water to the Sun God, and eat a purified meal. On Ashtami, they remain without food or water, worship in the evening, and break the fast (Paran) on Navami.

As per tradition, mothers listen to the legend of the eagle and jackal during the fast. It is believed that observing this vrat ensures children’s long life, good health, and removes obstacles from their lives. Mothers pray that their sons live like kings — prosperous and long-lived — through this sacred observance.
