Nisha Bhagat Suicide Case: NCW Seeks Probe, Digital Evidence Preservation; Protests Erupt in Gumla

Ranchi: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged suicide of tribal leader Nisha Bhagat and directed the concerned authorities to ensure a fair, comprehensive and time-bound investigation. The commission has also sought the preservation of her Facebook Live video, call records and other digital evidence related to the case.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the concerned officials, directing them to review the police investigation and provide details of action taken on complaints lodged earlier by Nisha Bhagat. The commission has also called for accountability if any police personnel are found guilty of negligence or dereliction of duty. It stressed that necessary assistance must be extended to the bereaved family.

The NCW has sought a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within seven days.

Meanwhile, Nisha Bhagat’s last rites were performed on Saturday at her native village, Uru Bardih, in Gumla district, according to Sarna traditions. Her body had reached Gumla on Friday night and was kept at her residence on DSP Road, where political leaders, public representatives and members of the Sarna community paid their last respects.

Sarna Community Protests, Demands CBI Probe

On Saturday, members of the Sarna community staged a protest at Tower Chowk in Gumla, demanding a CBI investigation into the incident and strict action against those responsible. Women also participated in the protest march and raised slogans demanding justice for Nisha Bhagat.

Earlier, members of the tribal community held a meeting at the Sarna site on Palkot Road to discuss the incident and chalk out a strategy for the next phase of their agitation.

A funeral procession was taken out from her residence on DSP Road, attended by representatives of the tribal community and villagers. The emergence of Nisha Bhagat’s final Facebook Live video had also prompted several relatives and well-wishers to reach Gumla to express their condolences.

Political Leaders Pay Tribute, Demand Justice

Several leaders from both the ruling alliance and the Opposition visited Nisha Bhagat’s residence to pay tribute and console the grieving family. Those who visited included former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi, former Chief Minister Madhu Koda, former MP Geeta Koda, Gumla MLA Bhushan Tirkey, Zila Parishad Chairperson Kiran Mala Bara, Municipal Council Chairperson Shakuntala Oraon and former MLA Kamlesh Oraon.

Babulal Marandi alleged that Nisha Bhagat’s death was not an ordinary incident but was linked to prolonged pressure and a dispute over land. He said she had consistently fought to protect tribal land and had lodged a complaint at a police station four months ago, but no action was taken.

Marandi said he had watched her final video, in which she reportedly spoke about her suffering and the pressure she was facing. He demanded an impartial investigation based on the video and called for the arrest of Pithoria police station in-charge and Ajay Tirkey. He also demanded a CBI probe into the entire matter.

Former Chief Minister Madhu Koda demanded the arrest of all those whose names were mentioned by Nisha Bhagat in her Facebook Live video. He said the struggle for justice would continue until the accused were punished.

Gumla MLA Bhushan Tirkey described the incident as deeply disturbing for the entire tribal community. He said allegations against anyone should be thoroughly investigated to establish the facts.

JMM MLA Ramsurya Munda from Khunti also met the bereaved family and termed Nisha Bhagat’s death tragic, calling for a fair and impartial investigation into the case.
