Powering a New Bihar — The Turning Point Called Bhagalpur

Bihar News : For decades, Bihar has stood as a paradox — rich in potential, yet poor in power. Its fertile land and hardworking youth have long been its greatest exports, as millions migrate each year to fuel the growth of other states. But with the 2,400 MW Bhagalpur Power Project finally taking shape, that story may soon change.

The ₹30,000-crore project, led by Adani Power Ltd through a transparent and competitive process, marks the most significant private investment Bihar has seen in over 50 years. It is not just a power plant — it is a bet on Bihar’s future.

Reliable energy is the backbone of development. Bihar’s per capita power consumption, just 317 kWh, remains the lowest among major Indian states. By contrast, Gujarat consumes over 1,980 kWh per person, and its GDP per capita is more than five times higher — proof that power and prosperity go hand in hand.

Currently, Bihar’s installed capacity of around 6,000 MW lags far behind its peak demand of 8,900 MW, forcing it to rely heavily on costly grid purchases. According to the Central Electricity Authority, the state’s demand will nearly double to 17,097 MW by 2035 — a clear warning that fresh investment is critical.

The Bhagalpur project could change that equation. Adding 2,400 MW of capacity will help bridge nearly a quarter of Bihar’s projected deficit, providing reliable base-load power to both industries and households.

Beyond power, the project promises massive employment gains. Every ₹1 crore spent on infrastructure generates around 200–250 man-years of work. With a ₹30,000-crore outlay, Bhagalpur could create millions of man-days of employment — allowing Bihar’s youth to find opportunity at home instead of migrating.

The process has been transparent and accountable. The land remains owned by the Bihar government and will revert after the lease term. Adani Power’s winning tariff of ₹6.075 per kWh is among the most competitive in India.

If implemented on time and with continued transparency, Bhagalpur could truly be a turning point — transforming Bihar from a power-poor, migration-prone state into a self-reliant growth hub in eastern India.
