Wild Elephant Menace Continues in Khunti, Woman Crushed to Death

Jharkhand News : The menace of wild elephants continues to claim lives in the rural areas of Khunti district, triggering panic among villagers. In a tragic incident late on Sunday night, a 60-year-old woman was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants in the Runia police station area.

The incident occurred around 2:00 AM in Digri Dahu Toli village, where a group of wild elephants entered the settlement and attacked Mariam Kongadi. She succumbed to her injuries on the spot, leaving the entire village in shock and mourning.

The deceased was the wife of Paharaja Pujhar Kongadi, who serves as the Block Vice President of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Intellectual Cell. Following the incident, locals immediately informed the Forest Department and district administration.

Residents said elephant movement in the area has increased significantly over the past few weeks, making nighttime travel extremely risky. Villagers expressed serious concerns over the lack of preventive measures despite repeated deadly incidents.

This is not an isolated case. A few days earlier, another villager, Krishna Singh, was also trampled to death by wild elephants in Bogtel village. Repeated attacks have intensified anger among residents, who are demanding immediate intervention from wildlife authorities.

Forest officials are reportedly monitoring elephant movement and have assured increased patrolling in the affected areas. Locals have urged the government to implement long-term solutions such as solar fencing, early warning systems, and timely compensation for affected families to curb the growing human-elephant conflict.
